Scope of work:

We performed an inspection and repair on a gearbox LOHMANN & STOLTERFOHT GWC-4549-1252.

We got this LOHMANN & STOLTERFOHT GWC-4549-1252 in our plant in September 2016 from Netherlands clients. After doing a test run, we shipped the gearbox back to our client.

Scope of work:

The gearbox is considered to be in acceptable condition.

The cooling capacity of the gearbox’s oil cooler is insufficient. Probably internal contamination of the cooling pipes are reducing the cooling performance of the cooler.

No significant damage was observed on the gears and the bearings. Only minor inline micropitting was observed on the ahead shaft pinion working flank.

Micropitting is a type of damage found on hardened gears, giving the flanks a dull grey appearance. Multiple factors are of influence on the development of the micro pitting. Surface roughness and lubrication are most important. The development of this type of damage can come to a complete standstill within time. However, it is possible for this type of damage to quickly develop into actual pitting or spalling, or even broken teeth, causing the gear to stop function normally.

It is recommended to:
- clean the gearbox’s oil cooler. Before cleaning the oil cooler make sure that all spare parts for this job are available. After the oil cooler is cleaned a pressure test is recommended
- perform a visual inspection with vibration measurements and alignment check of the gearbox, every year
- follow the maintenance schedule as specified in the gearbox manual.
