As a (dredging) shipyard Conrad was found in 1883 and was focused on the construction of maritime vessels and barges
with a specialization in floating installations for tin and gold mining.
Gears and gearboxes were initially used for CONRAD’s own use in shipbuilding and construction cranes.
With the close cooperation between Conrad and five other Dutch shipyards (later they formed IHC) during and after the war, the demand for CONRAD’s special dredging gearboxes increased.
This made it possible for CONRAD to specialize further in this industry. In the sixties and seventies CONRAD was known for their robust cutter gearboxes. CONRAD had customers in the following markets:
- Railways
- provincial and national governments
- producers of valves, pumps and steel.
