Rudder repair for cruise ship
We recently acquired a new division in Schiedam called GBS Machining Services. At this location we have the capacity to handle larger workpieces.
At our location in Oud-Beijerland (our headquarters) we focus primarily on gearboxes, and small to medium sized workpieces. With this new division in Schiedam we are now able to provide our clients a broader range of services and handle larger projects. The new division is a really valuable addition to GBS International.
We recently received a request from a cruise ship to make a large rudder fit on a new rudder stock. The ship experienced some technical difficulties with the rudder during a trip to Norway. The crew decided to head back to The Netherlands to get the rudder repaired. Since the rudder was rather large, this project was a perfect fit for GBS Machining Services.
After fully inspecting the rudder, we came to the conclusion that the rudder stock was twisted more than 30 degrees and therefore had to be renewed. After receiving all the materials from our supplier, we started machining a new rudder stock which took us 11 days. We simultaneously repaired the rudder by splitting it and welding it back together.
We also machined the steering gear components such as the tiller by machining the bore and keyways. We worked around the clock to finish this project as soon a possible for the client. Pictures from the project are included below.
